 Learn About Learning Standards

“It’s boring!!!!!!!!!” Your child may be a new reader or a seasoned one, finding a book that your child finds interesting, let alone loves, can be a challenge. There are a couple of tacks we can take here. The first one is dependent on your knowledge of what interests your child – and yes, that can come in phases. Your child may be in a fantasy phase, a nature phase, a biography phase, a mystery phase, or a “Little House on the Prairie” phase. Once your child hits a phase, its smooth sailing for a while; but once your child leaves the phase you are back to square one. Where do you turn to then?

Your state’s learning standards are a good resource. Take a look at what topics your child is learning about in social studies and science – that’s one of the ways education publishers figure out what to put in your child’s reading textbook. Publishers also use them to package the supplemental books (extra books) that are in your child’s classroom or your school’s library. Check out your state’s learning standards byclicking here .
