“It’s boring!!!!!!!!!” Your child may be a new reader or a seasoned one, finding a book that your child finds interesting, let alone loves, can be a challenge. There are a couple of tacks we can take here. The first one is dependent on your knowledge of what interests your child – and yes, that can come in phases. Your child may be in a fantasy phase, a nature phase, a biography phase, a mystery phase, or a “Little House on the Prairie” phase. Once your child hits a phase, its smooth sailing for a while; but once your child leaves the phase you are back to square one. Where do you turn to then?

Your state’s learning standards are a good resource. Take a look at what topics your child is learning about in social studies and science – that’s one of the ways education publishers figure out what to put in your child’s reading textbook.
