Kindergarten Map Activity Where I Live Collage You’ll Need: 30 minutes Magazines/newspapers Scissors Glue Construction paper Learning happens when: you and your child talk about where you live. Are there lots of cars? Lots of buildings? Maybe there are lots of cows or sheep? Is there a police station nearby? A shopping center? Talk with your child about the different types of communities there are – town, city, and country. What kind of community do you and your child live in? Go through the magazines and newspapers with your child and choose images that relate to your community. Glue these to the construction paper to create a community collage. Review how the different things used in the collage relate to your community. Mastery occurs when: your child can tell you what type of community he or she lives in and how he or she knows that. You may want to help your child a little more if: he or she has difficulty identifying the community he or she lives in. You may want to start out by pointing out different things that are unique about the community you live in. Then discuss how these different aspects of your community make it one of three special kinds of communities. Start off by just discussing your community. Then as your child gets more comfortable with it, introduce one of the other two types of communities and continue until your child can identify each type of community and some its characteristics.
