First Grade Map Activity Community Here or There? You’ll Need: 30 minutes Index cards Markers Learning happens when: Write the names of two or more types of communities (such as city, town, farm, rural, urban, etc.) on index cards and the names of community features (such as subways, tractors, fields, parks, a stadium, many people, few people, etc.) on other index cards. Place the community cards face up and give your child the index cards that have community features written on them. Ask your child to read the words on each card aloud and then match the card with the features to the right communities. Features that are in every community can go in any row. Your child should place that card above the name of the community he or she is choosing. Your child will end up making rows that look like a bar graph. Variations: If your child is familiar with specific diverse communities, then list those by name and ask your child to match the features to those places. Mastery occurs when: your child successfully matches the feature cards to the right community. You may want to help your child a little more if: your child has trouble matching the feature cards to the right community. Try giving your child a piece of paper with one type of community written on it. Brainstorm all of the things you can think of about the community and make the cards to match with your child. Do the same thing for another type of community, then try the activity again.
