Verse – Flowery, lovely, rhyming words and phrases

 

Blank verse - Not!

 

Ode – the opposite of new

 

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue – it’s quintessential – the poetry equivalent of Snoopy’s “It was a dark and stormy night…”

 

Alliteration – Same sound at the start of each word. Does it apply when it’s the same word? Like ‘no’ or ‘mom!’?

 

Ballad – It’s a story. Could be about something lost (homework, note from teacher, new jacket) or something found (puppy, candy). Doesn’t always add up.

 

Epic ballad – A very elaborate, detail-filled version of the ballad.

 

Limerick – Your youngster’s favorite form of verse – perhaps you’ve heard a few already?
